observed all things that Allah hath created, how their shadows incline to the
right and to the left, making prostration unto Allah, and they are lowly?

Commentary
Yata-fayya-‘u – (they incline),
origin of this word is fai-‘un. Fai-‘un means – the shadows which
incline after post meridian.
Zilaaluhuu – (their shadows), this word is
plural of zillun. Zillun means – a shadow which is during anti
meridian. The same shadow becomes fai-‘un after post meridian.
Daakhiruun – (lowly, humble, mean), it is
plural of daakhir, which is the subject and have been derived from the
word Dakhara. Dakhara means – obeying someone else being
helpless. A word which has the same meaning, is saagiruuna, has passed
in Suratut-Tawbah.
It has been commanded in this verse: O heedless
people! Have you ever seen to the shadow? The shadow of everything rises in the
morning and then it begins to decrease. It firms in the meridian and then when
the sun begins to set, it begins to incline again. In all such conditions it
lies down on the earth. Some times it moves to the right and some times to the
left. Its forehead lasts every time before Allah Almighty.
Is it not sufficient to cause to know the people
that even this shadow too does not turn away a little from the Divine Law? Moreover,
the things, shadows of which make prostration in obedience of Allah Almighty,
are helpless before Him. And those things are unable to slide hither or thither
even a little from His that Law, which He has fixed for them. Is this lowly and
baseness not a proof of the Existence of Allah Almighty Who is the Strongest
and Omnipotent? Concluding only this by looking the things that “these are for
our eating, these places are for our living and these are ready to serve us” is
our foolishness. We have to know Allah Almighty by reflecting into them.
