Putting not faith in the Messenger -1

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

90.  And they say: We will not put faith in thee till thou cause a spring to gush forth from the earth for us-

91.  Or thou have a garden of date-palms and grapes, and cause rivers to gush forth therein abundantly-

92a.  Or thou cause the heaven to fall upon us piecemeal, as thou hast pretended,
90.  Wa  qaaluu  lan-nu’-mina  laka  hattaa  taf-jura  lanaa  minal-‘arzi  yambuu-‘aa.

91.  ‘Aw  takuuna  laka  janna-tum-min-nakhiilinw-wa  ‘inabin  fa-tufajjiral-‘anhaara  khilaala-haa  taf-jiiraa.

92a.  ‘Aw  tusqitas-samaaa-‘a  kamaa  za-‘amta  ‘alaynaa  kisa-fan

Commentary

Taf-jura – (you cause to gush forth), origin of this word is fa-ja-ra. Fajara means “to split, to bring out another thing from a thing by tearing it”.

Tufajjira means “you should cause to gush forth (from many places of the earth)”. It has been derived from the word tafjiir, origin of which is the same as mentioned above, but meaning of “abundant” are found in it, that is to say, “many canals should begin to flow naturally after gushing the springs forth from various places of the land”.

Kisa-fan – (piecemeal, piece by piece), this word is plural of kisfatun. It means “a piece; which has been separated by breaking from another thing, a cut piece”.

Za-‘amta – (you pretended), it is past tense from the word za-‘ama, which means “to lay claim, to say strongly, to presume”. Here it aims “that warning of Holy Qur’an which exists in its verses”.

The idolaters of Makkah said: We shall believe in You {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} at that time when, either You will show us at the spot; a spring gushing forth before us from the land by splitting it, or implant a garden of date-palms and grapes and cause to flow canals into it unto every side instantly, or as You say usually; You should cause the heaven to fall upon our heads piecemeal just now.
