Chapter Kahf (The Cave) – 18

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

19a.  And in like manner We awakened them that they might question one another. A speaker from among them said: How long have ye tarried? They said: We have tarried a day or some part of a day. (Others) said: Your Lord best knoweth what ye have tarried.
19a.  Wa  kazaalika  ba-‘asNaa-hum  li-yatasaaa-‘aluu  baynahum.  Qaala  qaaa-‘ilum-minhum  kam  labistum.  Qaaluu  labisnaa  yawman  ‘aw  ba’-za  yawm.  Qaaluu  Rabbukum  ‘A’-lamu  bimaa labistum.

Commentary

Ba-‘asNaa – (We awakened), it is past tense from the word ba-‘asa, which means “to send after awakening, to awake and make alert again from senseless condition, whether that senselessness is by asleep or awakening from the death”. However, here it aims “to awaken”. In the next part of this verse, the word of command “Fab-‘asuuu  ‘ahadakum” has come, which is from the same origin also and it means “Now send one of you”.

Li-yatasaaa-‘aluu – (so that they might question), Li means “so that” and its aim is to manifest the purpose of the work. But here, the result from it has been shown plainly, that is to say, “it was the result of their waking up that they began to speak one another”. The word “Yatasaaa-‘aluu is actually yatasaaa-‘aluuna (they should question one another), origin of this word is su‘aal which means “question, query, request, ask etc.”

It is commanded: When they slept comfortably in the Cave for a long time continuously, then, as We caused to sleep them with Our Power, in the like manner, We awakened them at a suitable time. They could never think that how long did they tarry and the world would have been so much changed. After waking up they would have think immediately that “we had to arrange for saving ourselves from seizure of the cruel King, otherwise as soon as we shall go out of the Cave, shall be entangled in any great misfortune. We should not be careless. One of them said: Not too much time has passed when we reached here. After entering in the Cave we went to sleep immediately and had been senseless. But it seems that we did not sleep much time, perhaps a day or some part of the day would have passed in asleep. Then they spoke: Our Lord knows best how long we have slept.
