Commentary

‘Utlu – (Recite!), it is word of command from the word talawa. Tilaawatun means “to cause to hear by reciting”. ‘Utlu  ‘alayhim  naba-‘a  ‘Ibraahiim (Recite and cause to hear them the story of Abraham).

Descriptions concerning the circumstances of Moses (peace be upon him) were over. Allaah Almighty appointed him Own Messenger, sent him towards Pharaoh and his folk. They were drunk in luxury. People of his entire folk had become chiefs. They had chosen Pharaoh as their King who had made them his adorers and made the Children of Israel his and his folk’s slaves.

Moses and his brother Aaron (peace be upon them) reached there, who caused to understand Pharaoh very much but he denied. Ultimately Pharaoh and his folk were ruined and Moses (peace be upon him) brought the Children of Israel across the Sea. It was a great portent of the Omnipotence of Allaah Almighty. Even after looking this portent, maximum people of them did not believe. Allaah Almighty destroyed the disobedient people and He was Merciful upon the obedient.

After that, it is commanded: Recite and cause to hear them the story of Abraham (peace be upon him) also. His father and his entire folk used to worship idols. He (peace be upon him) asked from them: Of whom do you worship? They said: Do you not behold that we worship idols and are devoted unto them all the day? Abraham (peace be upon him) said: I have been looking the same, but tell me: Do they hear you when you call them? Or have they ever benefited or harmed you? Have they power to hear your call or benefit you?

Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) was desirous to convince them by showing quite apparent portents that: O foes of sense! Unto whom you have been devoting? Neither they can hear, nor can speak, nor they can benefit and nor can harm.
