Commentary
‘It-tayyarnaa – {we considered a bad omen, we guessed that (you) were unfortunate}, it is
past tense from the word ‘ittayyirun, origin of which is tayr. Tayr
means “to fly”. Then from the word taa-‘ir, people began to take omen of
bad presage, because people of Arab used to take bad omen from way of flying of
the birds. The word ‘ittayyarun is actually tatayyarun, the aim
from which is “to consider ‘ill-omened.
Tuftanuuna – {(you) are being tested}, it has been
derived from fitnah, which means “mischief, sedition, temptation etc.”
Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was saying to the
people of his folk: you had to fear from the wrath of Allaah Almighty,
abstain from evil deeds and seek His forgiveness from old wicked deeds. That
way, you would have to hope for His mercy upon yourselves, but you began to rebel
and ask for doom forthwith.
The people of the folk replied after hearing from the Prophet: O
Salih (peace be upon him): we have been greatly worried due to you. We
consider that you are ill-omened. You have sown dissension among our people. Pleasantness
of life has become affliction. The people have become enemies of one another.
Business and trade has been decreasing. Jollity and joke have been finished.
Salih (peace be upon him) said: This is unluckiness of your own
misdeeds. These entire calamities are result of your wicked acts. Allaah
Almighty has ensnared you in afflictions due to your disbelief; that whether
you repent or otherwise?
