water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the
flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam. And from that which they smelt
in the fire in order to make ornaments and other articles riseth a foam like
unto it.

Commentary
In this verse, the aim is to draw attention unto an
incident, next from which, reality of True and False will be manifested. It is
commanded: Allah Almighty causes to rain from the sky. When the water is
collected, it begins to flow in the land, level of which is lower than its
surroundings. During the process of flowing this water, rubbish and dung etc.
assembles in abundance on its surface, and begins to flow along with it,
covering the water. Like this, for making the ornaments or other articles, ore
is melted on the fire. When they smelt it, dirt, filth and swelling foam etc.
rise on the surface of melted ore, as it rises on the flowing water. The same
condition appears when we cook syrups etc. This rubbish and dung etc. over the
water, swelling foam over the melted ore etc. are useless things. And these are
not taken as considerable. Actual things which are useful and which cause to
reap advantage, are – that water and ore which are below the swelling foam,
dirt and filth etc. Therefore, those things, which are over the surface, are
thrown away. And useful things are brought in use. These dirt, filth and
swelling foam etc. are removed at last, though apparently those cover the
actual thing entirely and spread over it. Actual useful thing remains below
them.
