Commentary

Waliidan – (child), it is a tense of adjective from the word walad. Walad means “to give birth”. According to Arabic language, waliid means “a boy” and waliidah means “a girl”. Other words used for the same purpose are sabiyyun and sabiyyatun.

‘Izan – {when (I) did}, ‘Iz means “when”.

Kaafiriin – (the ingrates), this word is plural of kaafir, which is subject from kafara. Actual meaning of kafara is thanklessness. In the same meanings it has been used here because Pharaoh was not confuted of Allaah Almighty.

It is commanded: Messenger Moses (peace be upon him) met with Pharaoh and conveyed him the Message of Allaah Almighty which was given to him (peace be upon him) in Aiman Valley, when he was returning from Median. It was described also in Chapter TAA-HAA. When he (peace be upon him) reached the Country of Egypt, he took his brother Aaron along with himself (peace be upon them) and went to meet Pharaoh. During meeting, he caused to hear the Message of Allaah Almighty to Pharaoh. As soon as Pharaoh saw him (peace be upon him), he knew at once, because Moses (peace be upon him) was brought up at his home. And he said: Are you not that person to whom we nourished at our home when you were a child and you dwelled many years with us when you were young? Then you committed such work which was not acceptable, that is to say, you killed a man of our folk and ran away. Your name was included in the list of ingrate people because your such deed was contrary to our kindness.

Moses (peace be upon him) said: No doubt that a man of your folk was slain by my hand, but it happened unwillingly. I gave him a blow to make him right. I was not aware that he would die by only one blow with fist. There is no question of grateful and ingrate in this matter. Many works are done by mankind unknowingly. Perhaps giving a box was not suitable, but I considered erroneously that evil of his useless work would come in his mind thoroughly by doing so. I did this and I confess my error.
