Commentary
Pharaoh had become some satisfied that his people were on his
side. He got the upper hand from it and threatened Moses (peace be upon him):
You don’t know me! If you did not refrain from believing in any other God save
me, I would throw you into the prison.
Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) said: If I show you any such
portent that by beholding of which there will remain no doubt for you to
believe in the Lord of the Worlds and to admit that I am His Messenger, then
will you act upon that Message which I have been conveying you? Pharaoh
thought: What such portent would be with him? He (peace be upon him) is telling
a lie. He said: Good! Show us that portent if you are true. Moses (peace be
upon him) flung down his staff, which became a hissing serpent within a moment and
began to run here and there. On the other side, he (peace be upon him) drew
forth his hand from his armpit, which began to shine being bright and the eyes
of the beholders began to become radiance. Pharaoh was confused so much that he
forgot all his claims of godhead.
The serpent had been coming running toward Pharaoh as well as
the eyes had been becoming blind due to brightness of the hand. He would have
thought that the time of his death has reached. The serpent would not leave him
without swallowing. Earlier; he was threatening Moses (peace be upon him),
whereas then he began to flatter him (peace be upon him) and cry for own safety.
People began to flee from his Court.
Moses (peace be upon him) thought that now perhaps they would
believe. So he caught the serpent which became a staff again. He (peace be upon
him) concealed his hand, so brightness disappeared and Pharaoh was comforted.
