Request of Chieftains

Chapter Shu-‘araaa’”- (The Poets) - 26

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

34.  (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard –

35.  Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?

36.  They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners –

37.  Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.
34.  Qaala  lil-mala-‘i  hawla-huuu  ‘inna  haazaa  la-saahirun  ‘aliim.

35.  Yuriidu  ‘any-yukhrijakum-min  ‘arzikum-  bi-sihrihii  famaa-zaa  ta’-muruun.

36.  Qaaluuu  ‘arjih  wa  ‘akhaahu  wab-‘as  fil-Madaaa-‘ini  haashiriin.

37.  Ya’-tuuka  bi-kulli  sahhaa-rin  ‘aliim.

Commentary

‘Arjih – (Put him off), it is a word of command from ‘irjaa-‘un which has come out from raj-wu. Raj-wu means “to hope”. ‘Irjaa-‘un is transitive, the aim from which is “to delay, to put off”.

Sahhaa-run – (knowing wizards), this word has been derived from sahar. Saahir is the subject from the same. Pharaoh considered that Moses (peace be upon him) was a wizard, so he brought great knowing wizards opposite to him.

Haashiriina – (the summoners, callers for assemblage of persons), this word is plural of haashir, which is the subject from hashar. Hashar means “to collect”. Haashir means “the person who calls for gathering”.

Pharaoh was proud of his power. When the haughtiness occupies the head, then it does not vacate the head easily and it goes out usually when the head is beheaded. From the Staff and the White Hand of Moses (peace be upon him), Pharaoh had been out of his senses. When his mind began to work, his same mania returned that he was most powerful. However there was some difference that he began to get counsel from his chiefs and considered that debating by alone him against such frightful opposite would not be useful. He said to his chieftains who were present around him in the Court: it seems that he (peace be upon him) is a great knowing wizard. It means that he desires to drive you out of your land and establish own government. Now tell me! What should we do?

They all requested: it would not be better to say something to Moses and his brother (peace be upon them) at the spot. Better is it that we should send intelligent persons to big cities, so that they collect great knowing wizards from everywhere and bring them here for striving against Moses (peace be upon him).
