Fear of a fall to poverty

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) - 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَلَاتَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَوْلَٰدَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَٰقٍ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُهُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْـًٔا كَبِيرًا 31

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا 32 

31.  And slay not your children, fearing a fall to poverty. We provide for them and for you. Lo! The slaying of them is great sin. 32.  And come not near unto adultery, lo! It is an abomination and an evil way.

31.  Wa  laa  taqtuluuu  ‘awlaada-kum  khashyata  ‘imlaaq.  Nahnu  Narzuquhum  wa  ‘iyyaakum.  ‘Inna  qatlahum  kaana  khit-‘an  kabiiraa. 32.  Wa  laa  taqrabuz-zinaaa  ‘innahuu  kaana  faahishah.  Wa  saaa-‘a  sabiilaa.

       

Commentary

‘Imlaaq – (poverty, indigence), this word has come out from malaqa, which means “ease, respite, facility, mildness”. In the word ‘imlaaq, “‘i” is a negative argument, which will be meant as “for seizing by force”, that is to say, unavailability of facilities (wretchedness). Similarly, there is another word “’iflaas”, which means “unavailability of falas”. Falas means “money”.

It is commanded that you should not kill your children because of the fear that how you will arrange for their provision. Allah Almighty has arranged enough for mankind’s provision in the world. He commands: As We provide you food, We shall provide to your children also.

Before Islam, the people of Arab used to slay their children during infancy. They used to say: While we get along with difficulty, then whence the provision for them will come. Holy Qur’an forbids from it and describes its reason also that “Allah Almighty has arranged to provide all means of subsistence abundantly and gave sense to the human being. Certainly He can manage in such a way that no one may desire anxiously for fulfilling own requirements.

Then it is commanded: Don’t have any unlawful concern with any illegal woman without marriage. But you should refrain even from such matters because of which there is a risk of being involved in fornication. Adultery is immodesty and which child will be born by it, would be as though, adulterer parents slew him in the lifetime because such children will dwell infamy life which is worse than death. It is like making a mankind entirely beast. This is evil-living way and cause of destruction of the humanity.
