A wizard does not prosper anywhere

Chapter TAA-HAA – 20

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

67.  So Moses conceived a fear in his mind.

68.  We said: Fear not! Lo! Thou art the higher.

69.  And throw that which is in thy right hand! It will eat up that which they have made. Lo! That which they have made is but a wizard’s artifice. And a wizard shall not prosper wherever he goes.
67.  Fa-‘awjasa  fii  nafsihii  khii-fatam-Muusaa.

68.  QulNaa  laa  takhaf  ‘innaka  ‘antal-‘a’-laa.

69.  Wa  ‘alqi  maa  fii  yamiinika  talqaf  maa  sana-‘uu.  ‘Innamaa  sana-‘uu  kaydu  saahir.  Wa  laa  yuflihus-saahiru  haysu  ‘ataa.

Commentary

‘Awjasa – (conceived), it is a past tense from the word ‘iijaasun, origin of which is wa-ja-sun. Wajasun means “perception”. ‘Iijaasun means “to perceive, to realize in the mind”.

Khii-fatun – (fear), this word has been derived from “khawf” and it is used for disclosing the condition of fear.

Allaah Almighty bestowed this miracle to Moses (peace be upon him) that when he used to throw his staff on the earth, it used to become a serpent. At that time, the people began to see that snakes were running all sides which was an artifice of the wizards that they confined their vision. Moses (peace be upon him) feared that if he threw the staff, that will also become a snake. Then how the people will make distinction that; which snake is of the miracle and which are of the magic? On that occasion, it was revealed unto Moses (peace be upon him): You should not fear. Your staff will not only become a serpent but it will show many great wonders, and you certainly will be higher than all of them. Throw now your staff and look the exhibition; produced by the Power of Allaah Almighty. Your staff (serpent) will eat up their all magical snakes, because those are not actual snakes. Originality of anything cannot be changed by enchantment, but it is changed in an imaginary form for awhile. Your staff is not an imaginary serpent, but it is appearance of the Omnipotence of Allaah Almighty. Magical wonders expire very soon and the last success can never be to them. Fear not, they cannot win from you.
