Commentary

The people desire to remain engaged in their personal works and pastimes. If they are informed about any useful matter, they do not like to hear it, because they consider that whatever they have been doing is quite right, whereas there is a need of its correction, so that it may not harm them. For such people, it is being commanded to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) that he should say to them: I advise you only for it that you should give up thinking selfishness and personal benefits, stand up for the Cause of Allaah Almighty, leave the religious persecution, and meditate in this matter individually as well as collectively that this Man; Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him), who is your best friend and companion, who has been dwelling between you for forty years continuously, you are convinced of his honesty, trust, kindness upon the poor and sympathy. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) did never try to harm anyone of you. Can you think now that he has become mad in a state of ease and comfort, that he describes you such matters which are useful for you? He did never claim from you for his chief-ship, honor and authority. He has been terrifying you only from the severe Doom, before it’s falling upon you suddenly due to your wicked deeds. He has been saying to you: O slaves of Allaah! Get ready for escaping from the terrific punishment, otherwise if you did not care; then it will seize you suddenly.
