Commentary

When Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) said to the people of the folk: These idols are made of stone and you yourselves have got them fabricated from your artisans. Neither these can hear and nor see. It is impossible that these may hear your call or give you reply; if you call them. Neither these can produce anything and nor can kill any living being. Neither these can benefit you and nor can harm you.

They began to say as answer: Give up it. It is useless. We don’t know these matters. We know only this that we have seen our fathers and forefathers doing so. They used to worship them, sacrifice their offerings upon them and were ever devoted unto them. We also have been acting on the same in their imitation, which they used to do during their entire life.

After hearing this all from the people of the folk, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) said: Behold! If your fathers and forefathers used to go astray, then it is not incumbent that you also should adopt the same path. Allaah Almighty has bestowed sense to you too. Not this that only they were intelligent and you are compelled to follow their footsteps. Listen to me! I see all of them with hatred eyes; by adoring whom; your forefathers departed from the world. Those are useless and can never help anyone in any matter. I consider that those are my enemies, because those destroy my time.

My Lord is That Who has been bringing up to every living being of the world.
